Web Design Launchpad: Blast Off to Your First Website!

Ready to build your own website? This beginner-friendly course is your launchpad!
Learn the essential tools of web design while gaining a deeper understanding of how the internet works. You’ll start with the basics—how websites function, how routing works, and what happens behind the scenes when you load a page.
From there, you’ll dive into structuring content with HTML and styling it with CSS to bring your ideas to life on the web. Depending on the pace of the class, you may also get a taste of JavaScript to add basic interactivity to your site.
Your project will be to create a simple personal webpage using HTML, CSS, and possibly JavaScript. Along the way, we’ll explore how Artificial Intelligence is beginning to transform the field of web design.

Web Design Warp Speed - Intermediate Class

Take your web design skills to warp speed!
This intermediate course is for those who’ve already mastered the basics (like from our beginner class!) and are ready to level up.
You’ll dive into more advanced CSS styling techniques, including using media queries to create responsive, mobile-friendly designs. Next, you’ll explore practical JavaScript use-cases to make your websites interactive and engaging. Along the way, you’ll learn how to manage your code using Git for version control (on GitLab), and get an introduction to modern JavaScript frameworks like React and/or Svelte.
Your project will involve building another webpage—this time enhanced with JavaScript and possibly even a lightweight database like SQLite, depending on class progress. We’ll also take a look at how Artificial Intelligence is influencing the future of web design.
Instructor Andrew Rust of ByteSize Learning will be your co-pilot as you build dynamic, modern websites that go beyond the basics.

Corrugated Greatness - Cardboard Construction

Would you like to learn new ways to build interesting and fun projects?
Cardboard is one of the most available, low-cost, and easy to work with materials for building interesting things. Come learn to measure, cut and connect cardboard in ways that will give you new ideas how to use the material.
We will be practicing measuring, learning tool safety, and trying new cardboard techniques. We will even explore computer aided design (CAD) and laser cutting. Campers will build a desktop storage container, make texture art, and create a project of their choosing that uses their new knowledge.

Over the five-day session, you'll gain hands-on experience with Arc Welding. Learn how to safely operate welding equipment, understand different metals and their properties, and master essential welding techniques like joint preparation, heat control, and puddle manipulation.
Beyond technical proficiency, this course introduces students to the artistic side of welding. Explore the possibilities of creating unique and visually stunning metalwork. Thaddeus will guide you through design concepts, project planning, and finishing techniques to help you bring your ideas to life.
This course is the perfect opportunity to ignite your creativity and forge your path in the world of metalworking.

Instructor: Thaddeus Prevette, Mixxer Resident Artist
Instructor Bio: Thaddeus Prevette is a sculpture artist who began working with three dimensional objects back in 2016. He graduated from Western Carolina University in 2020 with a BFA in studio art and graduated from East Carolina University with an MFA in sculpture in May of 2023. He participates in public art exhibitions and was commissioned for the design of the ECU 911 Memorial sculpture back in 2021. He works with recycled and repurposed material to create narrative artwork that is influenced by historic and modern mythologies.

From First Stitches to Upcycled Style

Embark on a two-week fashion design journey, starting with the basics and culminating in sustainable creations! Week one, "First Steps in Fashion," will cover the essentials of sewing: learn to operate a sewing machine, understand and use patterns (and even create your own!), and explore a variety of stitches. You'll put your skills to the test by making your own garment. Week two, "Upcycled Fashion," dives into the exciting world of sustainable design. Discover how to deconstruct, reconstruct, and alter existing garments to create unique and stylish pieces. Learn textile manipulation and embellishment techniques to transform old clothes into fashionable new designs.

First Steps: Savannah Shanley (she/her) joined the Mixxer staff as Events Manager in May of 2023 after graduating from Salem College. She loves all kinds of creative mediums including painting and printmaking but her biggest passion is the art of quiltmaking and fiber arts. She loves helping others to learn and share their creativity with the world. Stop by to say hello whenever you're at Mixxer!
Upcycled Fashion: June Jones, Mixxer Sewing Team Lead, will share her expertise throughout both weeks. All tools and materials are provided, and lunch is included.
